I SOPRAVVISSUTI: Racconti e Ombre
Fra le questioni contemporanee che mi hanno toccato profondamente c’e’ il genocidio raccapricciante in Siria e le migliaia di persone che stanno scappando in cerca di sicurezza per se stessi e per i loro bambini. Guardando le immagini dei rifugiati che hanno sopravvissuto la traversata e quelli che sono morti in mare, per la prima volta riconosco che durante la mia vita non e’ cambiato niente. Dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale a oggi, la disperazione per trovare un posto sicuro per la proprio famiglia continua. Incluse in questa serie ci sono alcune foto di gente che arriva sull’isola di Lesbo. Sono tutti i superstiti, come mia madre lo era durante l’olocausto, e ho provato a onorare i loro racconti e i loro ricordi.
SURVIVORS: Memories and Shadows
Among the contemporary issues that has affected me profoundly is the horrific genocide in Syria and the thousands fleeing by boat for their safety and lives of their children. As I look at the images of the refugees who have survived the crossing, and of those who have perished at sea, for the first time I recognize that in my lifetime nothing has changed. From WWII to today, the desperation to find safe haven for one’s children continues. Included in this series are photographs of people coming to the island of Lesbos. They are all survivors, like my mother during the Holocaust, and I have tried to honor their stories and their memories.
